11/20/2022 Description of the Recipients of this Letter

This letter was written to brothers and sisters in the Lord. I notice that, in America, people like to Define things. In Africa, we love to Describe things. What is the difference?

    • To Define something is to use words to give it a name, a title, a label.

    • To Describe something is to reveal qualities about it - what does that thing do.

Let's go back to I Thessalonians 1:4 and ask, "What is a brother and a sister?"

    • " Someone who shares the same source - God is their father

    • " Someone who is loved by God, elected by God, touched by God

    • " Someone who belongs to God's Family, who works with other family members to serve our Father - They protect the relationship with their other brothers and sisters

    • " Someone who is chosen by God - Love is a selection. Love is focused. In romantic love, there is usually a response involving the emotions. What does it mean to you that God loves you and has chosen you to be His?

How did the brothers and sisters live?

In I Thessalonians 1:5, we learn that they received the Word of God with eagerness. It was a powerful response to God's Spirit. They had full assurance. Think of the choices you have made to love someone. Marriage is an example, in the Bible, of our relationship with Christ. Think of how a man chooses to propose marriage to a woman. He must express and show love. Think of the response of the woman. In our culture (Zambia) women are taught to not say "yes" the first time. Act like you don't like him. Make him ask again, later. When the proposal is accepted, there is much joy and emotion. That works in Zambia, with men and women. But, with God, you should accept His proposal (The Gospel) the first time. Don't waste time. There may not be a second time. The Thessalonians responded immediately when they heard the Gospel. What does it mean to you, when the Lord confesses His love for you and proposes that you join Him and become His bride?

In I Thessalonians 1:6, we learn that they wanted to live differently. They became imitators of Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy. They followed their example. Think of the example of a young boy who wants to grow up and be like his father. When you lead people to faith in Christ, then live a life that can be an example for them to follow.

In the world, many people follow / imitate the lives of celebrities. But celebrities don't reveal their real life. They show a "stage-life." They put on a mask that is not real. They are not a good example. Real Christians should not put on a mask. We need a real-life example that is good for others to follow. God wants to be able to say, "There is my son… there is my daughter, look at them." - just like God said of Job.

The American churches wear a lot of masks. You may not be giving us (In Africa) a good example, from what we see on television. May we have a church that loves the Lord Jesus Christ - that is making a difference in our time. May that church be our church.

Why is the description of a brother or sister important? Why does it make a difference how we live? Who is watching us, to imitate us? What needs to be done in our time? If there is a time when we need to live as brothers and sisters in our world, it is now! If there is a time that God is looking for His children to live as examples to the world, it is now! We don't seem to have good examples around us. Several problems are dividing the church. May the brothers come together, to care for one another, to demonstrate the life of how the church should be.

08/28/2022 First, the conclusion: The primary source we need to read or hear every day is God's Word: The Bible. Then we must live it.

    (Deuteronomy 6:2-9; Galatians 3:6-9)

The title above refers to a TV series and a book: "The Waltons," based on the life of Earl Hamner Jr. who grew up in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and WWII. The other is "Pilgrim's Progress," by Puritan preacher John Bunyan (1628-1688). It depicts the travels of a Pilgrim on a life journey to the Celestial City (heaven). He meets many challenges. Vanity Fair is an exciting worldly city, away from the road on which he was directed to stay. Tragedy is the result. Along with his companion, they consider where Truth should be found, and hard times avoided. We are all on a life journey. Each time we stray from the directed path, we do harm to ourselves and others. My earlier life resembled John-boy Walton. My "Vanity Fair" was seven years in the Navy (NYC, the French Riviera, San Francisco) and four years in college.

Key Verses: Knowledge we need to know, believe, and live (through God's help)

Psalm 119:160 "Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endure forever."

Hebrews 4:12-13 The power of the written Word: "For the Word of God is alive and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and interns of the heart".

Hebrews 1:1-3 Jesus: The all-powerful Creator came to earth in humility. He taught, fed the hungry, healed the sick, brought the dead back to life, comforted many, forgave sins, the Lamb of God who died for the sins of those who accept him. He was raised from the dead for all to see and will come again in in supreme power to cleanse the earth and give his people eternal life in heaven.

    See also John 1:1-5, 9-14; Colossians 1:1-3; Revelation 1:5-8; Revelation 20

Do we understand this? Consider the words of Hebrews 4:12-13

"Alive and Powerful": not words on a page, but God speaking directly to you and me: teaching, convicting, warning, admonishing, calming, comforting, saving.

"Sharper than any two-edged sword": - not cutting off your head or destroying your body, but saving, protecting, guarding.

"Piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit and the joints and marrow:" Truth encompassing the entire self. God knows your mind, heart, soul, psyche, spirit, and your physical body

"A discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Scripture gives us insight into ourselves. It shows us that God knows us entirely (Psalm 139) but loves us completely. We are His creation, meant to have fellowship with Him. He hears. He blesses. He forgives. He protects.

Will people refuse to believe the Word of God? God directs us to be salt and light to people in this world. We must not hide our light under a bushel (Matthew 5:13-16). Can we answer people's questions through the use of Scripture?

    Many will ask,

    • "If these things are true, why does God allow evil?"

    • "If the Word of God is powerful… if God is all powerful, why isn't evil destroyed?"

    • "Why isn't there an end to suffering?"

    • "Why aren't those people healed, who pray for healing from cancer?"

    • "What about people who keep praying for help to stop doing drugs or alcohol?"

Why? Why? Why? (This game is called "Stump the Professor") The truth is many times we do not have the answer. Here are some answers that Scripture does give us:

God's ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) yet he blesses us every day. Count your blessings (Psalm 118).

Suffering may be given or allowed to help us change our ways or to turn our eyes to him (Example: Paul's conversion Acts 9:1-18).

God chastises those he loves. (Hebrews 12:5-6).

God still heals, but he's not our genie. (1 Corinthians 12:27- 31; James 5:13-15).

Why does evil exist? God has given us a wonderful gift: freedom of choice (Joshua 24:14-15); he did not make us robots. Mankind's free choices have brought sin into the world, have damaged the earth, have resulted in millions of deaths.

God gave us Truth, the Bible (John 17:17, Psalm 119:160; Isaiah 45:19). God promises to hear and answer the prayers of his people in his Will (1 John 5:14-15). We are limited; we cannot see the big picture. But we do have the responsibility to speak openly with people. God's people have shared Truth with us and we as Christians need to share our faith with those who are lost (2 Corinthians 5:18-21) ; Psalm 145).

Our Mission: Hebrews 12:1-4 "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking to Jesus…"

  • A more direct translation "This was evil to Jonah, this great evil, and he burned with anger."
  • Jonah is saying in his heart "God you have acted wickedly by committing this great injustice of showing mercy."
  • The bible doesn't say why he found this to be unjust, but three ideas are often proposed.
    • Jonah wanted to decide who was worthy of mercy and judgement
      • He took God's place in judging
      • "Those people will never change"
      • Don't we do this all the time? … "That person won't listen" …"They don't deserve it"
    • Jonah thought he knew better than God
      • He likely thought his anger was righteous indignation.
      • He had a strong conviction about what should happen, and it conflicts with God's desires and plan
    • Misplaced patriotism
      • Idolized his own wellbeing and the wellbeing of his nation. He desired to see his enemies destroyed
      • "But there are problems here"
      • We are plagued with American exceptionalism, ideas of superiority, and Christian nationalism, and other national idolatries.
      • There is no "America First" in the Church or in God's kingdom.
  • Ultimately, He is angry with God, because he didn't know God's Character.
  • Jonah 4:2 - "He prayed to the LORD, 'Isn't this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity."

    • We finally learn from Jonah's own mouth why he fled from God's calling. Not because he was afraid for his own life, but because he knew God is gracious and compassionate
    • He didn't want to go because he knew God would relent from destroying Nineveh
    • Jonah Directs his anger to God and shows an incredible distain for human life, for those who receive God's mercy, and for God himself. He basically says, "God I knew that you are too soft and weak to do what needs to be done."
    • But here is the thing: Jonah was orthodox (his theology was correct, he had good doctrine, he was biblically accurate)
    • Jonah's prayer is a direct quote from Joel and is part of an ancient creed/confession found in many places, but beginning in Exodus
    • After the golden calf episode, we read in Exodus 34:6-7, "The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, 'The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…'"
    • Jonah's anger is that God acted exactly according to his Word. And Jonah knew his word

You can be orthodox/biblical/doctrinally pure and not know God's character.

    • Trust me I know. I went to seminary, I know creeds, confessions, many theologies, and Hebrew. But that doesn't mean I know God.
    • Yet it is easy to be deceived. I easily fall here where I think knowing about God is the same as knowing God.
    • It was Jonah's "good" theology that kept him from God's mission.

Jonah 4:3 - "'Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.'"

    • God's mercy didn't fit with Jonah's ideas of justice, so he would rather God kill him than spare thousands of people.

Jonah 4:4 - "But the LORD replied, 'Is it right for you to be angry?'"

    • God's satire is great.
    • Notice Jonah doesn't even dignify this with a response.

Jonah 4:5-8 - "Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant[a] and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, 'It would be better for me to die than to live."

    • God appoints many things in the book of Jonah: storm, fish, plant, worm, and wind.
    • When God appoints, Nature obeys. Only people ever refuse God's call.

Jonah 4:9 - "But God said to Jonah, 'Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?' 'It is,' he said. 'And I'm so angry I wish I were dead.'" Here are some ironies to consider:

    • God shows mercy to a repenting city, and Jonah is disgusted. God removes a plant from unrepenting Jonah, and he is distraught.
      • Like a child that would rather have no toy, than share
    • The evil king thinks "Who knows? Let's trust in God's compassion!"
    • Jonah says, "I know you are compassionate, so you can't be trusted!"

Jonah 4:10-11 - "But the LORD said, 'You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left - and also many animals?'"

    • Jonah 4:11 can be translated two ways:
      • "Should I not have compassion?"
      • "I will not have compassion." -
      • Consider what God did to Nineveh 100 years later - See the book of Nahum.

Jonah left out part of the ancient confession.

    • Exodus 34:6-7 - "The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.'"

Exodus 33:19 - "… I will have mercy on whom I have mercy"

I hope you can agree with me that the reason Jonah fled God's call was because he didn't know the Character of God.

This is true of us all. People don't join in God's mission because they don't know God's character.

Yet, Jonah teaches us that God's purpose will prevail… either to your praise or your detriment.

Missions aren't about the missionary or the presentation.

Missions are about the character of God amidst obstinate and sinful people.

God calls us to go out to all nations and make disciples of every people, nation, tribe, and tongue. (See 2 Peter 3:9-10.)

People need the word of God in Christ. (See Romans 10:9-15.)

"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, 'Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.' For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile - the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!'"

      1. The Family: Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents, etc.
    2. Educators: formal and informal
    3. Government at all levels
    4. Individuals who stand for the true Lord.
    B. Scripture records how influential leaders affect nations and people.
     1. One example: the history of Judah from King Rehoboam to King Zedekiah, a period of about 350 years. Reference: 1 Kings 12 to 2 Kings 26 and 2 Chronicles 10 - 36.
     Examples:
       a. King Rehoboam: 17 year reign: He rejected the law of the Lord. Judah suffered 17 years of division and war. Reference: 2 Chronicles 12
    b. King Asa: 41 year reign: Judah experienced a period of prosperity and reform.
    Read: 2 Chronicles 14:2, 15:9,12,15-16,19. Reference: 2 Chronicles 14, 15:9-15; 1 Kings 15:9-24
    c. King Jehoram & Queen Athaliah: 8 year reign: The King married Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. He murdered his brothers and did evil throughout his reign Their son Ahaziah followed him as king and only reigned one year. He did evil as did his father.
    Read: 2 Chronicles 21:4,6,12-13,; 22:2-4, 10-12; 23:1, 8-9, 11-13, 15-16

    Read: 2 Chronicles 24: 1-2, 15-25
    What lesson can we learn?
    e. King Hezekiah: 29 year reign. He did right and served the Lord all his reign, both in prosperity and during times of trouble.
    Read: 2 Chronicles 30:1, 26, 32:7-8, 12, 21-22/ Reference: 2 Chronicles 29:3.
    f. King Manasseh: 55 year reign Did evil throughout his reign.
    Read: 2 Kings 21:5-6, 16
    g. King Josiah: 31 year reign Did right and served the Lord all his days. His reforms resulted in discovery of the Book of the Law of the Lord given by Moses.
    Read: 2 Chronicles 34:29-33
    C. Just as the nation of Judah chose to follow the God of the Bible or chose to reject His Truths, our nation has experienced similar choices throughout our 247 years. Many influential leaders today, reject the Truths of the Bible. Our institutions teach opposing "truths" and do not know or do not want to know our Christian history. Much of our population has adopted these "enlightened truths".

How many of today's troubles reflect these decisions?: the selfish "it's all about me" attitudes, the crisis of family breakups, drug and alcohol abuse, dishonesty, a lack of work ethic, sexual immorality, sexual trafficking, pornography, suicide, violence, murder, rioting, poverty, etc.

    A. The Path to the Cross: Jesus knew throughout his ministry, where and how and for what purpose His earthly human life would end.
Let us follow parts of that path:

     1. The Miracle at Cana: Jesus mother tells Him, "they have no wine." John 2:1-5 "My hour has not yet come."

     2. Jesus causes division:
      a. They seek to kill Him but, "the hour has not come" John 7: 25-32
    b. The chief priests and Pharisees order his arrest. John 7: 43-53
    c. The following day: Jesus continues teaching at the temple. The Pharisees plot to trap Jesus.
       1) The adulterous woman: John 8: 1-11
2). "My hour has not yet come." John 8: 12-20
    3) Many believe but many also doubt. John 8: 20-32
    4) Two fathers: insightful but scary. John 8: 33-47

     3. "The hour has come": John 13:1. 13: 2-17
Before and after the Passover meal, Jesus shares words of encouragement and challenge to His disciples.
Read and believe these words of Truth that God has given to us:
John 13: 1-6; 14-15 (Jesus the Messiah, washes their feet: be a servant)
    John 14: 1-3 (I will come again)
John 14:6 (I am the only way)
    John 14: 16-17 (Another Comforter)
John 14: 21 (If we love Jesus, we will keep His commandments)
John 14:27 (Peace I leave with you)
John 15:1, 4-12 (I am the True Vine)
John 15:11 (My joy remains in you)
John 15: 12 (Love one another)
John 16:28, 31-33 (I have overcome the world)
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus the lamb of God will defeat sin and death.
      "If when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life…Christ by whom we have now received atonement…. (Rom 5:10-11) "Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Rom. 5:1));

      4. Read John 17: 1-26, 2:1 The Lord's Prayer:
Jesus knows the terrible agony He will now face: arrest, torture, crucifixion, death, and resurrection.
His love and prayers to the Father are not for Himself, but for His apostles, and for all future believers.
He is praying for you and for me. Thank you, Lord!

">The Lord's Prayer: The last prayer of Jesus before going to the Cross. Leroy Miller   07/05/2020 Since sin came into the world, this planet has experienced confusion and chaos: the killing of Abel, the Flood of Noah, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the downfall of Israel, the land of Jesus, and in every era since then. History shows that times are always better when people know and follow the Bible: the living Word of God. (examples?) Today we are in a time of confusion and chaos. Are we influencing the part of our world we live in, because we know, believe, and follow God's Truth? A. What is the setting: the state of Christian life when the Book of Hebrews was written? Answer: The writer is speaking to a second generation of Christians who are confused about their faith (whyjare they confused?). Paul, Peter, James, all urgently speak God's Truth to people living in this generation.
Paul: 2 Timothy 3:2,5,10-13; 4:1-7; Peter: 2 Peter 1:12-18 James: James 2:14,19        1. The purpose of the book of Hebrews: "Hold fast to your faith in Christ"           a. Read: Hebrews 1:1 Throughout history, God has spoken Truth to us in many ways: visions (Is. 6), dreams (Dan. 2), biography (the Gospels), sermons (Matt 5-7), poetry (Ps. 139), face to face conversations (Deut. 5:4), tablets of stone (Deut 10:4), miracles (John 6), parables (Luke 15), Inner compulsion (Acts 21:10-13), history (1 & 2 Chronicles), angels (Hebrews 1:14; Luke 1:26-38), historical research (Luke 1:1-4), through creation (Ps. 19:1 -4), The Bible (all), and most of all through Jesus' life, crucifixion, and resurrection, (John 1:1 -5,9-14; John 3:16-18) Which of these methods of communication are relevant to us today? Answer: Do not put limitations on God, but always make sure God's written word is supreme in judging correctness of what you may think you've been shown.        2. What does Scripture and history tell us about Jesus and eternal life vs what the world teaches?
    Hebrews 1:2-3; 10
    John 1:1-5, 10-12
    Jesus own words: John 10:37; 3:16-18; 5:24; 14:6
    Colossians 1:13-22
    Revelation 1:5-8, 17-19
    Isaiah9:2, 5-7; 53:1-12
         3. Where do we see confusion and chaos today, both in the Christian Church and in the world, concerning salvation? Do we know the Biblical meaning of "Faith"?        a. "If you say these words, if you pray this now, you have eternal life; once saved, always saved"; (misinterpret 1 John 5:13-14) Discuss
           b. "God has in eternity past chosen some and rejected others; there is no need for me to share Christ with others. Their destiny is determined by God." 1 Timothy 2: 3-6; 2 Peter 3:9        c. "Do you think you will go to heaven after you die?'' "Yes, I've tried to be a good person so God will let me into heaven." "II don't believe in a God who would send anyone to hell" Romans 3:23, 6:23; Isaiah64:6        d. "I believe there are many paths to God." John 14:6      4. Where am I and where are you concerning salvation and concerning living a iblical life here on earth? Are we included with the "saved"? Do we really hear the pleas and admonitions of the Do we trust and obey and serve? Are we holding fast to our faith as God's people? Do we begin each day in prayer and thanks to God? Are we daily in God's Word? Do we share God's awesome Truths with others? Do we tell others what God is doing in our lives? Do we not worry and be anxious? Do we go in God's strength rather than our own? Know that God is faithful and just, He knows our weaknesses and loves us still (Psalm 139). Thank you Lord! Please keep us in your_path and use us for your purpose. Let us meditate on David's prayer that should be our prayer also:
    Psalm 145
">Confusion and Chaos in our World: What does the Bible say?
    Leroy Miller   10/27/2019
  • Always liars
  • Evil beasts
  • Slow bellies / lazy gluttons
  • In other words, they were untrustworthy, deceivers, who did not naturally do good.
  • Titus was a Greek person who was united to Paul as a son in the faith. He had learned from Paul and was sent forth by him to work in this difficult culture.
  • Titus' Assignment (Titus 1:5)

Consider the negative culture in which these churches existed (Titus 1:10-16 cp. 2:11-15). There were many crooked things that Titus would have to straighten out as he made disciples and developed leaders. Note Titus 2:13-15. Jesus Christ is God! We must stand on His authority when we teach and preach in His name!

Consider what it means to work with people who are in the world and do not know God. Their defiled mind and conscience can make anything impure. They may be religious, but their lives show them to be reprobate. See Titus 1:15-16.

Consider the fact that we can speak of the things of Christ's gospel and Christ's kingdom today because of the faithfulness of men like Titus!

Ordaining / Appointing Elders in Crete (Titus 1:5)

Consider the fact that those who are appointed are sent by the Lord, yet the Lord is still with them. We all have a calling and are sent by the Lord to serve Him. We are accountable to Him. We need not fear, for the Lord will guide and protect us. See John 17:14-20; 20:21; Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 1:1-7; I Corinthians 1:1-9; Philippians 2:13-16; II Corinthians 2:14-17.

    Conclusion:
Paul's vision for doing missions well is based on the Word of God. Missions is not the spreading of culture, but the spreading of God's Word. It doesn't matter if it is Crete, or Africa, or America. All places have people who are liars and act as evil beasts. Someone needs to reach into the context of their culture and rescue them from it. We need to correctly apply the truth to that context / culture.

    ">Assignment of Titus
    Henry Mukonda
    (Pastor from Zambia, Africa)
08/25/2019 God has given us a Great Cloud of Witnesses:
May they encourage us to better Trust, Obey, and Serve our Lord.

Introduction: James 4:14 "Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a lithe while and then vanishes." Stand strong in Christ; don't be a "muckraker".

    A. We are saved by Faith, but Faith is not blind. Hebrew 12;1-2": Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses. let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily ensnare us, and let us run with patience (endurance) the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus,.. "
    1. Many witnesses given to us by God:
    a. The record of the Bible

    (1) Those who lived before us as witnesses of their faith and of the goodness of God: Genesis, Job, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, Acts, Romans 16: so many!. Hebrews 11 records many of God's people who's faith gave them courage to stay the course: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Sampson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets, and others who died for their faith.
    (2) God's Word from Genesis through Revelation: Truths that strengthen our faith: Psalm 119, Proverbs 1, Psalm 73, Luke 16: 19-31, John 3, Matthew 6:14, John 15:4-11, Romans 6:21, Romans 8:28-39, John 17, Revelation 3:14-22, Revelation 20-22.

    b. Created Life: Do you receive Blessings each day seeing God speak through His creation.

    (1) What does God say to you when he shows you Mayflies? (2500 different species)
    (2) What does God teach you from watching birds?
    (3) What does God teach you when enjoying or when being frustrated from your pets?
    (4) What does God teach you using other insect types? (choose from approximately 1 million of those named by humans)
    (5) Nature enriches our lives, point to the creator, and teaches us about ourselves: Genesis 1:24-25; Exodus 8; Job 39-40; Psalm 103:15-16; Psalm 104:14,21,27; Proverbs 6:6, 30:24-31; Matthew 6:26-30; Matthew 10: 29-31

    c. The Cosmos: Clearly teaches the power and glory of God: Psalm 19:1-3; Job 38-41
    d. People have touched our lives some for good; some for bad: These witnesses teach us how to live. Many people have touched our lives for good; some have strengthened us in Christ. Think of who has influenced your life by seemingly insignificant things that you still remember. Other people may have changed you for the better. Propose, each day to strengthen someone with a word of kindness, or a kind act, or sharing God's Truth with them, and you will be Blessed and will be a Blessing.
    e. God's Holy Spirit: Without God's Holy Spirit, we cannot know God. When we accept Jesus as Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit indwells us, gives understanding and gives guidance that unbelievers do not have. We need to listen to His voice. John 7: 38-39; John 14:16-18, 26; John 16:13; Romans 8:16, 26; 2 Corinthians 2:9-10; 1John 2:27
    B. Conclusions. We are Blessed; we have God's Word; we have the blood of Jesus that saves us by faith, we have his Holy Spirit within us; God hears our prayers and answers them; we can have moment to moment fellowship with Him; we are part of the universal church. Think about the value of the Written Word of God! When words are important to us, we engrave them in wood or stone. This makes them last longer. They can not be altered or rearranged. They cannot be deleted. Even so, God wants to engrave His Words into our hearts! He wants them to be a permanent, unchangeable influence and presence in our lives. This happens to be Mother's Day. Everyone is talking about mothers. Remembering and appreciating motherhood is important. Even so, every day we have the Scriptures, so that we can talk about God and His Son continually! It is a privilege to have the written Word of God.

    The Written Word of God

Written language points us back to the one who wrote. Scripture points us to the author, God. We must notice that God said it and He is still saying it today.

God writes His Words on our hearts so that it will have a lasting effect. When God's does this, He creates thanksgiving in our hearts.

The preaching of God's Word should be doctrinal. We need the facts / the truths that will make us free.

    Scripture unites us.

    Scripture Is Our Food

Americans love food. Eating brings pleasure. So, we should hunger for God's Word. Scripture should bring pleasure.

Food needs to be well prepared or we will become sick. Some people do not prepare God's Word properly. Then people are led astray. People trust the television too much. They believe what they are told and do not search the Scriptures to see if those things are true.

    Scripture Is Our Strength

    We can Stand on it.

    We can Fight with it.

    We are protected by it.

We can Face Death because of it.

    Scripture Is Our Work

It is our work to make others know the Lord. We present the Scriptures.

It is our work to live by the Scriptures. They regulate our life and we become examples of truth.

With our words and our lives, we hold God's ways before the World. God's ways are above the world's standard. The Gospel tells us that there is life after death. When we receive the Gospel, we are able to stand up and be strong (I Corinthians 15:1). As the Gospel facts are "according to the Scriptures" (I Corinthians 15:3-4), so everything we do in life should be according to the Scriptures. This should be the joy of our life. Consider Philippians 2:14-17.

Servant, Apostle, Separated - Romans 1:1

The word "servant" actually means "slave." We just don't help Christ. We belong to Him. Understanding who you are is a matter of knowing to whom you belong.

An apostle is "one who is sent as a delegate". We are Christ's representatives or ambassadors.

To be "separated unto the Gospel of God" means that we are "set apart" for the purpose of doing the work of the Gospel.

What is the Gospel of God? - Romans 1:2-4

    We…not me - Romans 1:5-6

As Paul describes his unique calling in the first verse, now he is telling us that we all have a calling. We believers have all received grace. We all have a mission and are sent to do the work of the Gospel. In Romans 1:6, many translations us the word "among." The ESV uses the word "included." That helps us understand that we all are called to be His separated people ("saints" - Romans 1:7). We all are sent to serve.

We have so great a salvation that has been given to both Jew and Gentile (Romans 1:16). This salvation should produce gratitude, love, and service. The work of the Gospel is both a privilege and a responsibility. We have the right to do it. We should run with it. Paul is saying to us, as a spiritual family, "You belong here. You work here!"

In another place, Paul said, "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified" (I Corinthians 2:2). He also said, "…Woe is unto me, if I preach not the Gospel!" (I Corinthians 9:16).

The Lord is near - Romans 1:7

">THE PERSON AND THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Pastor Duane Jass   07/11/2015 Missonaries: The McEvoys Steve McEvoy   10/12/2014

Ephesians 4:1 - A Vocation / calling: walk worthy of it. See Ephesians 4:2-3. A worthy walk is about character and attitude rather than skill.

Ephesians 4:7-8 - A Gifting: work willingly. See Ephesians 4:11-12. We may not all be called to become Pastors, evangelists, or missionaries, but everyone who receives Christ as their personal Lord and Savior is given at least one spriritual gift that they are to use to help others.

Ephesians 4:13 - A Goal: watchful and well. See Ephesians 4:14-16. The goal is maturity (i.e. conformity to the image of Christ). The Lord uses us to help each other grow up spiritually. We must watch for false teaching that causes harm. We must edify ("build up") each other, speaking the truth in love.

Paul Daniel's personal testimony and a report on the spiritual condition in India.

Paul Daniel's message from Scripture: Two "Walks" in Ephesians chapter 4.

Ephesians 4:1 tells us how to walk. Ephesians 4:17 tells us how not to walk. Do not walk as other Gentiles, in the vanity of their mind. In Deuteronomy 6:5 God told Israel to love Him with all their heart, soul and might. When Christ talked about this law He added the word "mind" to the list (Mark 12:28-30). By God's grace, the Old Testament saint could love God with heart, soul, and might, but to love God with the mind requires the "mind of Christ" (I Corinthians 2:16). The truth of Christ was hidden as a mystery in the Old Testament, but it is now revealed to us through the Gospel and by His Spirit (Colossians 1:25 - 2:4; I Corinthians 2:4-16).

  • The mind of Christ takes us to the Cross (Philippians 2:5-11).
  • The mind of Christ takes us to the cup of fellowship (Philippians 3:10; Matthew 20:20-23; 26:42; I Corinthians 11:25-26).
  • The mind of Christ takes us to the Battlefield (I Peter 4:1-2).
Consider Christ the Good Shepherd, who went to the cross (John 10:11).
Consider Christ the Great Shepherd, who guides, cares for and fellowships with us (Hebrews 13:20:21).  Consider Christ the Chief Shepherd, who, after we have served Him on the battlefield, will come again and reward us (I Peter 5:4).

Hebrews 11:8-10    8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Hebrews 11:13-16    13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.
14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
16 Instead, they were longing for a better country-- a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

    3. The New Jerusalem - Presented / The New Testament Heaven - Presented  Revelation 21 & 22    Summary: 22:1-4    1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.
4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." (The Eternal State)
Revelation 21:16    16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia {16 That is, about 1,400 miles (about 2,200 kilometers)} in length, and as wide and high as it is long.  Revelation 21:18-21    18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.
19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,
    20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. { The precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain.}
21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.
Revelation 21:22-27    22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.
24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.
25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.
26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.
27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Revelation 22:12-14    12 "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.
13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
