Reference: Psalm 111

This very positive psalm directs our minds and hearts to the subject of "the works of the LORD." This theme is not so academic, but rather compels our hearts to search and desire to see the works of the Lord in the world; in Scripture; and in our lives. The works of the Lord should, therefore, compel us to make decisions about the direction of our life. The climax of all God's works is manifested through Christ (Matthew 28:18 cp. John14:10-11; 5:30, 36; 6:38; 10:24-25, 37-38; 15:23-24; Acts 2:22). Therefore, we will consider Christ in all aspects of this psalm.

The Works of the LORD are Great - sought by the Lord's people. Psalm 111:2
     The Lord's people take pleasure in the Lord's works (Psalm 16:11). Don't neglect Christ's great salvation (Hebrews 2:3).

The Works of the LORD are Honorable and Glorious. Psalm 111:3
     Honor the Father & the Son (John 5:22-23 cp. I John 2:21-24). Glorify the Father & the Son (Matthew 5:14; Philippians 1:20-21; II Corinthians 3:18; Ephesians 3:21).

The Works of the LORD are Wonderful and Memorable. Psalm 111:4
     Christ is wonderful. The Father's work through Christ is wonderful (Isaiah 9:6-7; Acts 2:1-4, 7-11).
     What Christ has done is to be remembered (I Corinthians 11:23-26).

The Works of the LORD are Powerful. Psalm 111:6
     Consider Christ's power through the resurrection; through the Gospel; through His Spirit and His Kingdom (Romans 1:1-4,16; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 1:15-20; Philippians 3:10; I Corinthians 4:19-20).

The Works of the LORD are Verity (Truth) and Judgment (Deliverance)
     - established forever; true and upright. Psalm 111:7-8

     Christ's truth makes us forever free (John 8:30-32,36; 1:14-17; 14:6; 5:24; 6:37-40,44-45; 10:7-11,27-30; 17:1-26; Galatians 1:3-4; I John 1:5-2:2).

What should we do?

  • Praise Him (Psalm 111:1, 10);
  • Seek Him (Psalm 111:2);
  • Fear Him/Worship Him (Psalm 111:9-10);
  • Obey Him (Psalm 111:10).
  • Consider Christ: Acts 4:12; 17:30-31; John 8:12; 12:35-36; 14:15-27; 15:1-8; 16:33; Matthew 10:16-42; 28:18-20; Philippians 2:5-16
