Reference: II Corinthians 1:1-10

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;" - II Corinthians 1:3

Part of "blessing God" is acknowledging and thanking God for who He is and what He does. Let's look for information in this verse that does that:

The Father of our Lord Jesus Christ - provides a peaceful relationship.

  • "…The Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the World." (I John 4:14)
  • "…It pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell…" (Colossians 1:19 cp.2:6-10)
  • "…And, having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto himself…" (Colossians 1:20. See Colossians 1:20-22; Ephesians 1:3)

The Father of mercies - provides stability in life.

  • "…His mercy endures forever." (Psalm 136)
  • "…The LORD's mercies… are new every morning…" (Lamentations 3:22-23)
  • "The earth, O LORD, is full of your mercy…" (Psalm 119:64)

The God of all comfort - provides help, compensation, and hope.

  • "…That we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." (Romans 15:4)
  • "Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another…" (Romans 15:5 - NKJV cp. II Corinthians 1:4; Philippians 2:1-4)
  • "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28. See Romans 8:26-39)
  • "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." (Revelation 21:4. See Revelation 21:1-7; John 16:33)

So, in a world full of sin and strife, we can have love, stability, help, comfort, and hope. See Psalm 31:19-24; Philippians 4:4-19. His blessings are perfect and pure, enduring forever (Proverbs 10:22). The God of all comfort has delivered us from the power of sin, the fallen world and our enemy, Satan. He is the God of our salvation - the God of our deliverance (Psalm 18:1-3, 46; II Corinthians 1:10).

Now, let's consider II Corinthians 1:10

"Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us." - II Corinthians 1:10 (See Psalm 56:13; 116:1-9; Philippians 1:6)

The God of Deliverance

  • Justification - He has saved us from the penalty of sin. See Romans 5:1; II Timothy 1:9.
  • Sanctification - He is saving us from the power of sin. See John 17:14-17 (cp. James 1:21; I Timothy 4:16; II Timothy 3:15-17).
  • Glorification - He will save us from the presence of sin. See Romans 13:11; I Thessalonians 5:9-10.
  • See all three aspects of our salvation in Romans 5:6-11
    • Justification - Romans 5:9a; 5:10a; 5:11.
    • Sanctification - Romans 5:10b.
    • Glorification - Romans 5:9b.
