Whom Do We Worship? - Part I

The unsearchable God that must be sought.
Scriptures tell us that God is bigger than our minds; bigger than all of us and the universe put together. He is unmeasurable - unsearchable. Yet, we need to search and measure what we can. We will not worship God in Spirit and in Truth if we do it ignorantly. As stated before, there is a knowledge of God available, to all who will have it, through God's creation (Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20 cp. Job 12:7-9) and through the law that God has written in the consciences of men (Romans 2:14-15; Acts 17:24-28).

The exhausting God who must find us and reveal Himself to us.
In the book of Job, Zophar cried out in exasperation, "Can you by searching, find out God? Can you find out the Almighty unto Perfection?" (Job 11:7). The obvious answer is "no." The search for God is not a mere intellectual pursuit. Many try to figure out God, but their minds cannot do it and their hearts will not really let them do it. Paul tells us that "…the world by wisdom knew not God…" (I Corinthians 1:21). So much for religion and philosophy! See Psalm 14:1-3; Romans 1:21-23, 25, 28. It is God who is looking for us (John 4:23; 6:37, 44-45, 63; Luke 19:10).

The life-changing God.
Paul goes on to tell us how it is that men discover God. It is when their hearts are impacted by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is by "the foolishness of preaching…" (I Corinthians 1:21 cp. Romans 1:16-17). God's holiness, justice, love, and grace; Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection; the glorious promises to all believers - these are heart-changing / life changing truths. The Gospel, through the work of the Holy Spirit, changes the heart, allowing the mind to seek and know God (note the heart-problem in Matthew 21:32; Ephesians 4:17-18). See John 3:3-8; 4:14; 5:24-25; 6:63; 7:37-39; 11:25-26; 17:3; I John 5:20; Romans 5:1-11; 6:17-18; I Corinthians 1:17 - 2:16; II Peter 1:1-4; I John 4:19.

When our hearts have been brought to awe and wonder by the truth of the Gospel (as it can be done in Romans chapters 1-11), we then must let go of our mental activities and worship God with our soul - our innermost being (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Psalm 103:1; Romans 11:33-36).

The God who desires our fellowship.
So, as we pursue the idea of worshipping God intelligently, with our minds, we do not wish to have a mere theology session. We want to know and worship the God of the Gospel - the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. We want to worship Him in the context of the holy, mighty, gracious, loving, and attentive God that we have come to know personally through salvation (New Birth). As stated before, love (i.e. relationship) is the key to worship. Worship is not done as a mere duty. Nor is it just an academic exercise. It certainly is not for mere entertainment. See John 14:23; 17:21-26; I John 1:1-4; 3:1. Consider these three aspects of the God we worship.

The God who is there - His greatness
God is real. It's good to love the God who is bigger than anyone's imagination. He is amazing! Our hearts are lost in wonder, as we search the unsearchable!

The God who is here - His intimate presence
God is not merely "out there, somewhere." He is very close and involved with the affairs of men - the affairs of you. We are comforted by His closeness and attentiveness.

The God who hears - His personal care and help
God participates with us. He is interactive with our lives, our thoughts, our hopes, our fears, and our needs. He has plans for us. We lift up our soul to Him whose heart and hands are willing and able to bless us and enrich us.
