Reference: Psalm 27

Fear and insecurity drain us and can paralyze us. Desire can distract us or completely absorb us. At the same time, when properly directed, desire can empower us. In this world there are many forms of escape from reality: coping mechanisms to supposedly survive stress and boredom. A relationship with Christ removes fear and insecurity. A relationship with Christ gives us a way to focus our desires, so that our lives are powerful, joyful and meaningful. A relationship with Christ provides a way to escape into reality: to deliver us from the deceptions and intimidations of the world. Let’s see how Psalm 27 helps us in three ways to appreciate and make full use of our relationship with Christ.

He's My Hiding Place — Psalm 27:5

  • Two Aspects:
    1) God, in his sovereignty, invisibly protects us – without us even asking.
    2) We are to consciously resort to God – flee to Him for protection.
  • He hides me: (Psalm 27:5, 10 cp. 31:19-21) God is my Shield (3:3; 5:12; 18:35; 28:7; 33:20; 84:9; 115:9-11). See also Psalm 91; Proverbs 3:25-26.
  • I hide myself in Him: I seek the Lord in time of need (Psalm 27:9-13 cp. 56:1-13; 94:17-19; 118:5-9; Proverbs 18:10; Isaiah 26:3); God is my Sanctuary “You are my hiding place” (Psalm 119:114)
  • Consider Christ – Philippians 3:8-9; Romans 8:28-39; Galatians 1:3-4; Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 3:1-3; Hebrews 4:14-16. See also Isaiah 32:1-2 (a prophecy of Christ).
