"It is finished"(John 19:30) is one of the last things Jesus said on the cross (cp. Luke 23:46). After this He "gave up the ghost" or "gave up His spirit." With His last breath Christ yielded His soul, willingly, offering Himself to the Father as a sacrifice on our behalf (John 10:17-18; Hebrews 9:14; 10:10-14).
"It is finished" is translated from a single Greek word that means "it has been completed.'' The word has been found on old tax receipts, to declare them "paid in full." This coincides with what Christ said in His great intercessory and priestly prayer in John 17:4. He understood what He was doing and fully intended to go to the cross and complete His earthly mission (John 3:14-16, 12:32-33; 14:27-31 cp. 13:1; 15:9-13).
