In this portion of Scripture wisdom is personified as a woman - a pure and loving, motherly woman who is passionately reaching out to us, to save us from danger and vice. Her message is filled with warning as well as promises. See also Proverbs 3:13-18; 8:1-36; 9:1-12.

Wisdom's Call - Proverbs 1:20-23

• Her voice is heard through common people more than the teachings of intellectuals and academics (Proverbs 1:20-21 cp. I Corinthians 1:21 - 2:5).
• Her voice goes out to people who are charmed by vain things; entertained by mockery and filled with hatred for true knowledge (Proverbs 1:22 cp. 1:7; 13:13).
• Her words are empowered by God's Spirit. The mark of the Divine personality is in them (Proverbs 1:23 cp. 9:10; John 6:63; Romans 1:16; Hebrews 4:12-13).

Wisdom's Caution - Proverbs 1:24-32

• Disregard and rejection will lead to destruction and judgment (Proverbs 1:24-27). Please read Proverbs chapters 8 and 9.
• Wisdom's call is time-sensitive. It must not be taken for granted that we can cry for help when it is convenient for us. Hesitation is deadly. The results cannot be quickly reversed. There is no quick fix to the consequences of rebellion. When God's Spirit is grieved or quenched men will be hardened in their ways and cannot change themselves. See Proverbs 1:28-30; Psalm 95:6-11; Isaiah 55:6; 59:1-15; 64:6-7; Jeremiah 13:23-27; Romans 1:24-32; II Corinthians 6:1-2.
• Worldly behavior is its own punishment. It is a matter of sowing and reaping. The chickens come home to roost! See Proverbs 1:31; Numbers 32:23; Proverbs 5:21-22; 26:11; Psalm 9:15-16; 94:20-23; Romans 6:20-21; Galatians 6:7-8.
• Turning aside from God's ways to follow after fleshly comfort and worldly prosperity is to enter a path of destruction and death. See Proverbs 1:32; Psalm 1:1, 4-6; Proverbs 14:12; Matthew 7:13-14; 16:23-26; II Timothy 4:3-4; I John 2:15-17.

Wisdom's Commitment - Proverbs 1:33

• The call is going out to the world. It is full of promise and power. See II Peter 1:2-4
• The call is also going out to wake up sleepy, careless Christians. See I Peter 4:12-19; Romans 13:11-14; Ephesians 5:1-21; James 4:1-10.
• Are you a part of the call? We need to first heed, then share this word to others, showing by our example that this is a serious call. See Matthew 28:18-20; John 20-21; Revelation 22:16-17; I Timothy 4:12-16; Hebrews 10:24-15.
