So Much to Behold

Reference: John 19:1-27

On the day that Jesus Christ was crucified, there was much to behold. At least 33 Biblical prophecies were being fulfilled (e.g. Genesis 3:15; Exodus 12:46; Psalm 22:1,6-8,13,16-18,31). Our text gives us 4 distinct things to behold. These four considerations will help us to prepare our hearts for the observance of the Lord's Table and our celebration of Mother's Day.

"Behold the Man!" John 19:4-7
As a man, there was no fault, no sin in Him. Yet, he was numbered with the transgressors. Like the lamb used in the Temple sacrifices, Jesus Christ would take away the sin of the world. See John 1:29; Isaiah 53:1-6; Romans 8:3; II Corinthians 5:17-21; I Timothy 2:5-6. The Jews sought to kill this man because they could not understand the mystery: How could an ordinary-looking man be the very Son of God? See I Timothy 3:16; I Corinthians 2:7-8.

"Behold your King!" John 19:8-15
Not only was He rejected as Lord and King by His own people, but they chose Barabbas, a murderer and a rebel, to be spared instead of Him. See Matthew 27:15-23; Mark 15:6-15; Luke 23:19; John 18:38-40. They also chose the worldly Roman government, rather than His rule (John 19:12). See how Jesus Christ has overcome the world (the Romans, the Jews, all nations and powers) and is truly the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. See John 16:32-33; Revelation 1:9-18; 11:15; 17:14; 19:11-16.

"Woman, behold your son!" John 19:25-26
The sin of the world was being laid on our Savior. Yet, He took time to think and care for the needs of His mother! If the Son of God would set such an example, how, then, should we obey the command to honor your mother? - not only as children, but as adults! See Exodus 20:12; Matthew 15:1-9; Ephesians 6:1-3 cp. Proverbs 23:22. Note how Christ's mother "...stood by the cross of Jesus..." (John 19:25). The religious leaders of the Jews and the Roman government were against Him. Jesus' disciples forsook Him and fled, but mother-love would not budge. She silently suffered with Him. See Luke 2:34-35.

"Behold your mother!" John 19:27
Jesus said this to the disciple, "whom he loved" (John 19:26) - not a general instruction to all disciples. In the midst of intense times of service or suffering, we are to remember to care for specific needs of our parents. We are also to care for those who do not have others to care for them - no one left behind! See I Timothy 5:1-16; James 1:27.
