Reference: Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38

All babies are wonderful, but this baby is more wonderful than all. Our Scripture readings offer us names and titles for the babe, born in a manger, that describe and define who He is and what He will do. Using the name “Jesus,” we will make an acronym that gathers these names and titles. Hopefully, this will make them clear and memorable to us. Isaiah 9:6-7 will also be consulted for this purpose.

J Jehovah is the only Savior.

E Emmanuel – God came to save us.

S Son of the Highest / Son of God.

U Unto us a child is born. Unto us a son is given.

S Son of David.

JJehovah is the only Savior. Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:31
The name “Jesus” means “Jehovah is salvation.” Jonah 2:9 says, “…Salvation is of the LORD [Jehovah].” There is no deliverance from sin’s penalty and control, from the world’s evil, or from Satan’s power; except the Lord Jehovah provides it. See Isaiah 45:21-25.
EEmmanuel – God came to save us. Matthew 1:23
The name “Emmanuel” (spelled “Immanuel” in the Old Testament – Isaiah 7:14; 8:8, 10) means “God with us.” God could find no man that could deliver us from the curse that Adam caused. We are all sinners by nature and by choice. Someone sinless and perfect would have to pay the price that we could not pay ourselves. God Himself would have to become that man and bring us deliverance. See Romans 5:12-21; 3:9-26; II Corinthians 5:18-21; I Timothy 3:16.
SSon of the Highest / Son of God. Luke 1:32, 35
In order for our Savior to be the sinless Son of God, He would have to directly enter the womb of a woman. The seed of any descendant of Adam would have the curse of sin. So, God did an amazing thing. The Holy Spirit came to a young virgin, named Mary, and created the baby within her. That’s why He is referred to as the “seed of the woman” in Genesis 3:15 (note Galatians 4:4). Jesus is the eternal Son of God, coming from the Father. See Isaiah 7:14 (note other Messianic references: 8:8,10, 13-18); Matthew 1:23; John 3:16; I John 4:14.
UUnto us a child is born. Unto us a son is given. Isaiah 9:6
This place in Scripture shows the unique union of man and God. “A child is born” denotes the humanity of Jesus (I Timothy 2:5). “A son is given” denotes the deity of Christ (Colossians 2:9). Jesus is God’s perfect man and man’s perfect God. See Philippians 2:5-11 (note Isaiah 45:23 cp. 40:5; 42:8). Note all the other wonderful titles in Isaiah 9:6.
SSon of David. Luke 1:32-33
It was prophesied that the Messiah would come from the line of Israel’s Kings, the seed of David. Jesus is a King. Jesus is the King. His kingdom will ever increase until it dominates the entire world and universe. See Genesis 49:8-12; II Samuel 7:1-16; Isaiah 9:7; Romans 1:1-4; Revelation 17:14; 19:11-16.

Oh come, let us adore Him – Christ the Lord!
