Does God Lie?

Reference: I John 5:9-21

We have noted three places, in the book of I John, that deal with the lies of men. What is worse than being a liar? Perhaps it is a person who calls God a liar. What an accusation! Just read Romans 3:4; Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18 and there should be no question about God ever lying. However simple it may seem to a Bible-believing person, the world is still full of people who try to make God a liar! This is true even among people who use the Bible. We could discuss many places from Scripture where people deny what the Bible is teaching (Psalm 119:53,158,126; II Timothy 4:2-4; II Peter 3:3-17). However, we will limit this study to two places that deal with men calling God a liar.

"If we say that we have not sinned..." - I John 1:10

I John 1:5-10 gives us a sweeping picture of our relationship to God as believers in Christ. God is light (truth & purity). We cannot have fellowship (partnership) with God unless we walk in His light. When we sin, the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us and preserves our fellowship with God. We need to confess (agree with God) and God will forgive us and cleanse us. If we deny our sinfulness, we deceive ourselves and make God to be the liar.

Irreligious people can deny their sinfulness. So, can religious people, even people who claim to be Christians. God disagrees with them in graphic detail (Romans 3:9-20). A terrible example of this kind of denial is found in John 8:30-59. As Jesus is teaching, many of the Jews profess to believe on Him. Jesus admonishes them to continue in His word, so that they might be true disciples and be made free from sin. The Jews begin to argue with Jesus. He tells them that the devil is their father, making it impossible for them to follow the words of God. At the end, the same Jews, who claimed to believe in Jesus, tried to stone Him. Especially notice John 8:41-47. The Bible does not flatter us. Sin is not a pleasant subject (Psalm 10; 50:16-23; Revelation 21:8), but unless we are honest with God about our sin, there can be no salvation from it (Matthew 9:11-13; Luke 18:9-14; I Timothy 1:15).

He believes not the record that God gave of His Son. - I John 5:10

There are those that will admit that they have sinned; that they are sinners. Yet, they seek their own way of salvation. Systems of rituals, philosophies, and of various "good works" abound in the world. They are all vain (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25; Jeremiah 17:5-8; Acts 4:12; Colossians 2:8; Titus 3:4-6). Many even use the Bible to create their fruitless hopes, including Israel (Jeremiah 2:13, 22; Romans 10:1-4). No matter what part of the Bible you read, whatever time period is being covered, the central theme is Christ and His salvation (John 5:24, 37-47; Luke 24:25-27; 44-48; Galatians 3:24; II Timothy 3:15; I Peter 1:10-12). Only the Gospel truth of the Scriptures (the truth about Jesus) can save us (John 14:1-6; Romans 1:1-4,16; 10:1-17; 16:25-27; II Corinthians 10:3-5; Ephesians 4:21-24; I Peter 1:18-25). To ignore or disagree with God is to make Him a liar (I John 5:9-13). The results of making God a liar are disastrous (John 8:23-24; Acts 13:38-41).
