Reference: Deuteronomy 8:1-20
02/25 - 03/04/2018

Here is our outline of what we are studying from the eighth chapter of Deuteronomy:

The Promise of Prosperity - Deuteronomy 8:1
The Path of Humility - Deuteronomy 8:2-3
The Perspective of Faith - Deuteronomy 8:4-9
The Perils of Forgetfulness - Deuteronomy 8:10-17
The Persistence of Remembering the LORD - Deuteronomy 8:18-20

We began our study looking at God's promise of prosperity (Deuteronomy 8:1). However, that mountaintop of prosperity will require a trip through the valley of humility (Deuteronomy 8:2-3 cp. Proverbs 15:33; 18:12; 22:4). It takes faith to have hope for the future, but faith is also needed to look back and learn from the past. Faith, through the help of Scripture, interprets life and gives us our valuable lessons. See Psalm 77:10-13, 19 (KJV / NKJV); Hebrews 11:1 - 12:3.

We now consider The Perspective of Faith in Deuteronomy 8:4-9.

Reflect on the Past - See God at Work (Deuteronomy 8:4)

Sometimes we need to look back and not just consider what happened but consider also what did not happen. Many things we have done in the past could have gone very wrong. Things that did go wrong could have been much worse. The problems we have experienced often are not as bad as what others have experienced. It takes faith to look at the path behind us and see the fingerprints of God. Then we can become useful to others when they suffer similar situations. See Deuteronomy 32:1-14; Psalm 77:1-20; 124; 126; 143:1-6; Romans 5:1-5; Hebrews 10:32; Philippians 4:8; II Corinthians 1:3-5; 4:6-18.

Regarding God with Thoughts of Endearment - Think of Him as a Faithful Father (Deuteronomy 8:5)

Is your God an angry taskmaster? - a slave driver? - a cosmic "Party-Pooper"? Or is He a loving, faithful, and attentive Father who is nurturing you and protecting you for your own well-being? Earthly parents aren't perfect, but they usually are trying to do what's best for their children's welfare. The Heavenly Father is perfect! He has promised that what He has planned for us is for our good. He is not only saving us from Satan, from the world and from sin, but He is also saving us from ourselves. God, as a Father, has better plans for us. With everything God does, He has our eternal happiness and prosperity in mind.
See Deuteronomy 8:14-16; Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 8:28-32; Psalm 68:3-7; 103:8-14; 104:34; Proverbs 3:11-12; 13:24; Hebrews 12:5-11 cp. Psalm 89:1-4, 30-36.

Resolve to Obey and Honor God - Respect God and His Word (Deuteronomy 8:6)

God already stated the case that obedience would be blessed (Deuteronomy 8:1). However, it is not just a matter of following rules. Scripture connects us to an active relationship with the living God. How you love Him is seen in how you respond and relate to His Word.
See Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Psalm 19:7-14; 119:1-16,68; Proverbs 1:7; 2:1-22; John 4:23-24; Luke 6:46-49; Colossians 3:16-17; James 1:22-25; I John 5:1-3.

Respond to Life and Its Opportunities with Anticipation - See God's Will as a Way to Good Things. (Deuteronomy 8:7-9)

The will of God is not only inevitable, it is desirable. Christians should always have something to look forward to. Though we may suffer many things for Christ's sake, we have promises that should give us joy and hope. We must keep those promises before us and focus upon them with anticipation.
See Matthew 6:33 (cp. Matthew 6:19-34); Mark 10:23-30 (cp. Matthew 19:27-29; Luke 18:28-30); Hebrews 11:1,6; Romans 8:15-25; II Corinthians 4:16 - 5:8; I Peter 1:3-9; II Peter 1:1-4; 3:13-14; I John 3:1-3; 5:3-5.

"My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)

Paul felt the privilege of preaching "The unsearchable riches of Christ" (Ephesians 3:8). What are those unsearchable riches?

  • The Riches of His Grace - Ephesians 1:7; 2:7
  • The Riches of His Glory - Ephesians 1:18; 3:16
  • The Riches of His Mercy - Ephesians 2:4-6

"Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21)
