The Possibilities of God

One of the many amazing claims of the Bible is that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin. It is doubtful that Mary had any knowledge of Isaiah 7:14. Many Messianic promises were not understood until after their fulfillment and after the resurrected Christ explained them Himself (Luke 24:44-48). Nevertheless, when this young lady was told that she would conceive the Christ child, she sincerely asked, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” The answer, short and profound, was received in simple faith as the will of God. You and I will never have this same experience. Yet, in our lifetime, we will be challenged in a similar way. As we consider the will of God for our lives and the promises of God, we are going to have to face the challenge, “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).

God is not limited:

  • To the knowledge and power that we have.
  • To the knowledge and power that anyone else has.
God can do beyond what our imaginations can think.
God can do things that have no natural /scientific explanation.

God is:

  • Holy – Separate of all created things.
  • Creator and Sustainer of all things. He made and controls all things that you can see, hear, smell, taste, touch, and know.
  • Spirit – Not physical. Therefore He has no physical limitations.
  • Almighty – Omnipotent
  • All-knowing – Omniscient
  • Unchanging – Immutable i.e. can’t get better or worse.
  • Eternal – No beginning. No ending.
  • Sovereign – He rules all by himself.

God’s name is Jehovah / Yaweh = “I Am that I Am”i.e. I am because I am. I am self-existent. I need no one.

That’s a lot to take into our small minds. At this point we could easily go into a discussion about modern science and the Bible. But, before we deal with the cosmos, right now we need to ask, “Can God take care of my life?” When Jesus was dealing with a rich man about his eternal destiny He, afterwards, explained to His disciples about the difficulty riches can bring to the hearts of those who own them. The disciples wondered how anyone could then be saved. Jesus said, “With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:16-26).”

So, we have a God who is unlimited in His power. His purposes are never thwarted by man. Yet, God has shown us that we need to cooperate with Him by faith, or He will not reveal His glory to us (Psalm 78:40-41; Matthew 13:53-58).

One day Jesus saw that the disciples were having a problem. A man had a son that was possessed by a demon. The disciples were not able to cast out the demon like they could at other times. The father was confused and asked Jesus for help.

The man turned to Jesus and said, “If you can do any thing, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.” The man said, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Then Jesus cast out the demon.

Sometimes our faith is weak:

  • Because we do not understand enough about the Lord
  • Because we have been confused by the failure of other Christians
  • Because we naturally have a battle with fear and doubt.
But the Lord still helps us and strengthens our faith through difficult experiences.

The disciples asked why they were not able to get this demon to go. Jesus said that sometimes it requires “prayer and fasting.” We must be patient and not give up easily. Rather, we should keep seeking the Lord and wait for Him to work.

Keep these promises and instructions close to your heart at all times:

“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1:37)

“With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.” (Mark 9:23)

“…I, the LORD…there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:21b – 22)

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest you be wearied and faint in your minds.” (Hebrews 12:2-3)
